Transforming trajectories. Building leaders. Creating lifelong opportunity.
Outliers ACT Prep began as one student’s second chance at education and has grown into a system built to help motivated students turn disciplined effort into extraordinary outcomes.
What drives Outliers is not just test prep. It is the belief that structure, mentorship, accountability, and belief can change lives.

From personal transformation to a scalable system
Outliers was built from lived experience. Its origin story is not one of perfect credentials from the start, but of radical change through mentorship, accountability, and persistent effort.
A founder shaped by the hard way
Bobby Nicholson has described himself as a struggling student in high school. After dropping out, earning his GED, and enrolling at Pellissippi State, he encountered mentors who taught him how to succeed and helped reshape the direction of his life.
The official beginning
Outliers ACT Prep officially began on January 1, 2012. The early work grew out of mission-driven tutoring and the belief that consistent support over time changes outcomes.
The shift to ACT prep at scale
After an ACT prep experience with the University of Tennessee’s BETS program, it became clear that high-impact ACT prep could be delivered effectively in a group setting. In 2017, Outliers committed fully to becoming world-class at ACT prep.
The team-based model takes shape
The first in-house ACT class launched in a competitive, team-based format. That early experiment became the backbone of the Outliers model: live coaching, visible effort, and community-driven motivation.
A system built for serious students
Outliers exists for highly capable, self-motivated students who want a system worthy of their effort. Students are not handed a platform and left alone. They are coached by people who know them, track their work, notice patterns, and intervene early.
- Live team sessions
- Frequent coach check-ins
- Visible progress tracking
- Diagnostic assignments
- Competitive motivation
- Structured accountability
High expectations. Real guarantees.
When a student completes the program and averages 1.5 hours of prep per day, Outliers guarantees a five-point ACT score increase or the family gets their money back.
Coaching, technology, and accountability working together
Outliers grew by refining what worked and building systems that could expand without sacrificing relationships.
Mission-first roots
The work traces back to tutoring, accountability, college guidance, and long-term mentorship through the P.E.A.C.E. nonprofit and related mission-driven support for students.
ACT prep became the focus
Subject tutoring was impactful, but ACT prep aligned mission, measurable outcomes, and operational sustainability, allowing Outliers to pursue excellence in one area.
Technology became a force multiplier
With the launch of a proprietary platform in late 2022, Outliers expanded data-driven coaching, scalable accountability, and national mock ACT operations while keeping human relationships at the center.
The principles behind the work
Outliers aims to foster belief, build character, and train students in the skill sets needed to pursue their goals in life.
Purpose
Help students transform the trajectory of their lives by fostering belief, building character, and training them in skill sets to achieve their goals.
Aim
Happy, free, and fit for the good of our community.
Core values
- We treat people right.
- We do what we say we will do, or do what we can to make it right.
- We stay open to being wrong. Changing your mind is a virtue.
- We practice forgiveness and allow room for renewal.
- We build a family-oriented culture with authenticity and thick skin.
- We avoid status games that do not help the mission.
How Outliers wants to operate
- Freedom matters. Outliers wants employees to have freedom of schedule, freedom of location, and eventually greater financial freedom.
- Mission over outside pressure. It is intentionally a for-purpose entity focused on mission rather than short-term shareholder demands.
- Find a way. A resourceful, solutions-oriented posture is expected in the face of difficulty.
- Extreme ownership. The focus is on what can be done differently rather than on blame.
- Hire from within when possible. Outliers prioritizes internal growth and alumni development.
- No gossip. Problems should go directly to the person involved.
- Back the work. Products and services are supported by real guarantees and accountability.
- Pursue a true edge. Outliers only wants to build where it believes it can become the best, cheapest, or fastest in a niche.
A new era for the student experience, coaching systems, and community impact
The 2026 vision is not a cosmetic update. It is a deeper buildout of the systems, recognition structures, and outreach initiatives that shape the future of Outliers.
A stronger Gold Award path
The Gold Award becomes the formal path for students who choose from day one to make the program a top priority, with entry and continuation tied to performance and follow-through.
Smarter student app systems
2026 upgrades include automated worksheets, adaptive mastery, integrated messaging support, lesson tests, work tracking, and a more unified testing experience.
Coach-centric upgrades
Outliers is building stronger coaching workflows through personalized performance tracking, better internal communication systems, and more efficient tools for good news and follow-up.
Expanding community impact
In 2026, Outliers plans to launch an Advisory Council, award at least $50,000 in scholarships, expand teacher recognition through at least $10,000 in prizes, and create a service-first Community Outreach Coordinator role.
Looking ahead
The bigger long-term vision is to reach 1,000 students per year while preserving the level of value that makes the model exceptional.
Where Outliers wants to go next
- P.E.A.C.E. mentorship for middle and high school students
- P.E.A.C.E. summer internships focused on service and college guidance
- Nationwide Mock ACT programs for schools
- School-based ACT partnerships
- College academic coaching
- A freemium ACT app with gamified daily learning
- A business incubator for mission-aligned alumni
More than test prep
The throughline is clear: use systems, mentorship, and real accountability to create opportunity at scale.
The ambition is not simply to help students post better numbers. It is to help them build confidence, discipline, leadership, and long-term momentum.
For students, Outliers offers a demanding but deeply supportive path toward stronger outcomes. For coaches and team members, it offers the chance to build something meaningful, effective, and mission-driven.
