What is one ACT point worth?

That does not mean every student’s next point will add $2,100. Some points add nothing, while a point that crosses an important threshold can unlock thousands.
Why one ACT point does not have one fixed price
Scholarships work like stairs, not ramps. Moving from a 26 to a 27 might unlock a new award at one college, while moving from a 27 to a 28 might change nothing there. The same score can also be worth more or less depending on the student’s GPA and whether a college accepts an ACT superscore.
That is why families should ask a more useful question: What is the next scholarship threshold at each college my student is seriously considering?
How we calculated the $2,100 average
We examined every ACT score increase from 21 through 36 at four Tennessee universities with clear, usable ACT-based scholarship tables. Unlike an average based only on successful threshold jumps, this method includes the score increases that produce $0 in additional institutional aid.

Together, these published tables produce an average of approximately $2,133 per ACT point over four years. We round that figure to $2,100 per point because scholarship amounts and eligibility rules change regularly.
Important: This is an average across a defined score range, not a promise that a student’s next ACT point will produce $2,100. Students must also meet the applicable GPA, residency, application, deadline, and renewal requirements.
Current Tennessee scholarship thresholds
The table below summarizes several published institutional awards for Tennessee residents. HOPE is discussed separately because many students qualify for it through GPA without needing a particular ACT score.

UT Knoxville’s currently published Volunteer table labels its amounts as 2025–26 and notes that programs are reviewed annually. Families should confirm the award table for the student’s entry year.
Crossing a threshold is often worth much more than $2,100
Among the 19 ACT-triggered scholarship increases in our current dataset, crossing a published threshold changed the nominal four-year award by approximately $8,000 on average. The median threshold increase was $6,000. This is not the average value of every ACT point; it is the average value of the particular points that unlocked a higher award.
29 to 30 at UT Knoxville
With a qualifying 3.8+ UT weighted core GPA, entering the 30–33 Volunteer tier increases the institutional award by $8,000 over four years.
34 to 35 at Tennessee Tech
With a qualifying 3.75+ GPA, the award rises from $5,000 to $8,000 per year—a $12,000 four-year difference.
26 to 27 at ETSU
With a qualifying 3.5+ GPA, the APS award rises by $1,000 per year—a $4,000 four-year difference.
21 to 22 at MTSU
With the required 3.50 GPA and deadline met, a 22 reaches a scholarship with a nominal $14,000 four-year value.
Do not forget Tennessee HOPE
An eligible Tennessee high-school graduate can qualify for HOPE with a 21 ACT or a qualifying 3.0 GPA. For a full-time student attending fall and spring, the published payments total up to $20,400 across four academic years: $4,500 per year during the first two years and $5,700 per year during the final two.
Students who meet both a 3.75 final GPA and a 29 ACT may qualify for the General Assembly Merit Scholarship supplement. That adds $500 per full-time semester—normally $1,000 for a fall-and-spring academic year. Summer enrollment can affect the calendar-year maximum.
Because many Tennessee students qualify for HOPE through GPA alone, we did not include HOPE in the $2,100 institutional-scholarship average. For a student whose GPA does not independently qualify, however, reaching a 21 ACT can be an especially valuable financial threshold.

How families should use this information
- Build the college list first. A score increase is most valuable when it crosses a threshold at a college the student would genuinely consider.
- Check the GPA definition. Colleges may use a weighted, unweighted, core, or sixth-semester GPA.
- Check superscore rules. UT Knoxville superscores, while Tennessee Tech states that superscores cannot be used for scholarship eligibility.
- Work backward from scholarship deadlines. A scholarship deadline may arrive earlier than the regular admission deadline.
- Compare net price—not just the award. A larger scholarship at a more expensive college can still leave a larger bill.
- Verify renewal requirements. Full-time enrollment, college GPA, service hours, and satisfactory academic progress may all matter.

Across the four Tennessee universities in this analysis, one additional ACT point is associated with approximately $2,100 in additional four-year institutional scholarships, on average.
The value is personal and stepwise. The best target is not simply “one more point.” It is the next verified scholarship threshold at the colleges that fit the student academically, financially, and personally.
